Smart Warehouse – Smartphones and innovative scanners for ergonomic working in the warehouse
Manual tasks in operational logistics are often physically demanding and frequently characterised by repetitive movements. Against the backdrop of a shortage of logistics staff, ergonomics – and thus the attractiveness of working conditions for employees – is becoming a key focus for many companies. Ergonomics in the warehouse aims to adapt and create workplaces which – taking human physiology into account – enable employees to perform their tasks as comfortably as possible. This has a positive effect on staff, boosting motivation and significantly reducing sickness-related absenteeism.
In addition to traditional considerations, such as the employee’s general activities – walking, bending or lifting heavy loads – the technical ergonomics of systems and equipment is also a key factor.
Looking back over recent years, traditional Microsoft-based MDE devices have dominated the field of mobile data capture. However, the market for manufacturers offering Android-based terminals and handhelds alongside tried-and-tested Microsoft technology is growing. These modern technologies open up new areas of application.
In addition to traditional MDE-supported process handling, innovative concepts such as finger ring and back-of-the-hand scanners are also finding their way into logistics. iFD uses these devices in order picking for a customer in the textile sector. Once activated, the finger ring scanner can be effortlessly paired with the accompanying display, which is worn on the arm. This significantly eases the worker’s workload, as both hands remain free for tasks. The proven savings in processing times are enormous.
The use of comparatively inexpensive smartphones, with the appropriate add-on components, is also becoming increasingly attractive. In addition to specialised industrial hardware, iFD GmbH customers can pair standard Android devices with the iFD-WMS app. Many employees already use these devices in their private lives, which means that acceptance of the new components is virtually guaranteed and training can be carried out quickly and easily. In addition to intuitive operation, the cost advantage at the point of purchaseshould not be overlooked.
Android and iOS apps have also been developed for the iFD-WMS, ensuring the devices can be used quickly and reliably. The technology upgrade provides iFD GmbH’s customers with greater flexibility, future-proofing and performance.
